Introduction

Pitlochry punches above its small-town weight at every turn. Set in the forested hills of Highland Perthshire, it has the infrastructure of a proper tourist town, excellent accommodation, great food, a working theatre, without ever losing its Highland character.

Queen's View, a few miles west, is one of Scotland's most photographed viewpoints: Loch Tummel stretching into the mountains, named for a visit by Victoria. The Pitlochry Dam fish ladder lets you watch Atlantic salmon navigate their way upstream through glass-sided observation windows, genuinely extraordinary. Fonab Castle Spa on the loch edge raises the wellness bar considerably.

Killiecrankie Gorge a few miles north is a dramatic NTS woodland site with historical battlefield significance. Pitlochry Theatre runs a serious programme season.

Getting There

On the A9, 25 miles north of Perth. Direct trains from Edinburgh (1h45) and Inverness (1h15). Pitlochry has its own station. An easy first stop on any Highland journey.

Areas to Know

Atholl Road is the main street with most restaurants and shops. The loch and dam are a short walk east. Fonab Castle is on the southern loch edge.
