A proper Cumbrian inn on the fell side of Troutbeck, unchanged in spirit for 300 years. The sign outside still carries the old couplet about malt and mortality. Inside: low beams, a fire that burns most of the year, and real ales from Cumbrian breweries.
The food is home-cooked and honest. The garden looks south across the valley. It earns its reputation without trying, which is the most reliable kind of pub.
