Introduction

Plockton is the warmest anomaly in Scottish geography. The Gulf Stream keeps the shoreline mild enough for palm trees to thrive on the harbour front, actual palm trees, growing against a backdrop of Highland peaks and sea loch. It shouldn't work. It absolutely does.

The village sits on a small peninsula jutting into Loch Carron, with a harbour, a short main street and the kind of peaceful quality that makes people buy properties here the moment they can afford to. Seal boat trips run from the pier regularly, harbour seals are a reliable presence in the bay.

Plockton Shores serves some of the best seafood in the Highlands with views over the loch. The Plockton Hotel is the village social hub. The Kyle of Lochalsh and Eilean Donan Castle are a short drive.

Getting There

On the railway line between Inverness and Kyle of Lochalsh, one of Scotland's most scenic train journeys. By car, take the A87 west from Inverness then the A890. Plockton is a 15-minute drive from the main road.

Areas to Know

The village is tiny, everything centres on Harbour Street and the waterfront. No need for a map; orientation takes about three minutes.
