Introduction

Dundee did something remarkable, it turned post-industrial decline into a genuine cultural renaissance. The V&A Dundee, opened on the Tay waterfront in 2018, was the catalyst: a bold, angular building housing Scotland's first design museum. The city rebuilt its confidence around it and hasn't looked back.

The waterfront is now properly lovely, the V&A alongside the RSS Discovery, Dundee's historic polar exploration ship. Verdant Works tells the story of Dundee's jute industry inside a UNESCO-listed Victorian mill with the kind of dramatic industrial interiors that repay attention. McManus Galleries houses the city's art collection in a spectacular Victorian Gothic building.

Dundee eats well, drinks well and is substantially cheaper than Edinburgh. Often underrated in Scotland travel guides, correctly regarded by people who've been.

Getting There

Direct trains from Edinburgh (1h15) and Glasgow (1h30). The A90 from Perth takes 20 minutes. Dundee Airport has limited routes. The train drops you close to the waterfront.

Areas to Know

The waterfront runs from the V&A east past Discovery Quay. The city centre is a short walk uphill. The Westend has the university area and independent food scene. The Shore is the emerging waterfront dining strip.
