Introduction

Aberfeldy sits in the Tay valley with the kind of natural setting that makes you understand why people chose to build towns here in the first place. The River Tay runs through it, Perthshire hills rise on all sides, and the town itself has enough good food and beautiful spaces to justify a proper weekend.

The Watermill is the anchor, a converted 18th-century mill housing a celebrated independent bookshop and a café where you can genuinely lose an afternoon. Dewar's Distillery offers one of Scotland's better whisky tour experiences with a handsome riverside setting. The Birks woodland walk above town was inspired by Robert Burns and delivers waterfalls and panoramic views in about two hours.

Loch Tay is minutes south, wide, still and beautiful for picnics, paddleboarding or simply sitting beside. Aberfeldy punches well above its size.

Getting There

About an hour from Perth by car on the A827. No direct train. Perth or Pitlochry are the closest rail connections, with bus links. The journey through Perthshire is worth taking slowly.

Areas to Know

The town centre is compact around Breadalbane Street and the bridge. The Watermill and distillery are both within easy walking distance. Moness Drive leads up to the Birks trailhead.
