Burns walked the Birks in 1787 and came home to write a song. The circular woodland trail climbs through birch, oak and rowan above a gorge of tumbling waterfalls, opening to valley views at the top. It's under two hours and genuinely beautiful.
The path is well-made but gets slippery after rain, the waterfalls are best after a wet spell. Start from the car park at the top of Moness Crescent.
