Anstruther Fish Bar has been winning awards for fish and chips for longer than most of its competitors have existed. The haddock is local, the batter is correct, and the location, beside the harbour in one of Fife's prettiest fishing villages, gives you the option of eating outside with a direct view of the sea. This is what fish and chips are supposed to be.
The queue at lunchtime is real and worth joining. The drive down the East Neuk coast from St Andrews through Crail and Pittenweem takes 15 minutes and is itself excellent, small fishing villages, lobster creels on the harbour walls, the Firth of Forth to the south.
