Overview

There's a reason people queue outside Dishoom in the rain, sometimes for an hour, sometimes more. The King's Cross branch, tucked into the old Granary Building at Coal Drops Yard, might be the most atmospheric of the lot, all dark wood, ceiling fans, vintage tins, and the warm smell of spiced chai drifting out onto the cobbles before you've even walked through the door.

Dishoom takes its cues from the Irani cafés that defined Bombay's social life for a century, places owned by Zoroastrian immigrants from Iran, where the city's workers, writers, and everyone in between sat side by side over tea and bun maska. Those original cafés are mostly gone now. Dishoom is its own thing, obviously, but it carries that spirit well.

What to Order

The black dal is the anchor. It slow-cooks for 24 hours and arrives as something close to silk, deeply savoury, with a richness that stops just short of being heavy. Order it with the roomali roti and a raita. The bacon naan roll at breakfast is one of the most satisfying things you can eat in London for under £10. The Irani chai, spiced, sweet, made with full-fat milk, is non-negotiable.

The house black is their cocktail worth knowing: coffee-forward and dark, good for transitions between afternoon and evening. The mattar paneer is consistently excellent. The chicken tikka is much better than it has any right to be in a restaurant this popular.

The Vibe

Loud, warm, always busy. Not the place for a quiet catch-up where you need to hear every word, but perfect for that particular kind of date energy where the noise and closeness of the room does half the work for you. The booths at the back of the King's Cross branch feel the most private. If you're going for dinner, join the queue at 5:30pm and you'll usually be inside within 45 minutes.

Breakfast (served from 8am on weekdays, 9am on weekends) is the secret entry point, shorter queues, calmer atmosphere, and the full menu still available.

Practical Notes

  • No reservations for most tables, join the walk-in queue. They do take bookings for large groups.
  • Opens 8am weekdays, 9am weekends. Last orders around 11pm.
  • The Coal Drops Yard setting means it's genuinely lovely in good weather, grab a seat on the terrace if you can.
  • King's Cross, St Pancras, and the canal are all within five minutes' walk, making this a good starting point for a longer day.
