Columbia Road Flower Market

£0–£20marketBethnal Green, London

London's famous Sunday flower market, a narrow Victorian street that transforms into a corridor of colour, scent, and cheerful traders from 8am until noon.

£0–£20 per person · Free to walk. Flowers are very affordable, especially near closing time when traders call prices down.

Overview

Columbia Road is one of those London experiences that sounds like it should be over-curated and over-visited and somehow isn't. On Sunday mornings, this narrow Victorian terrace in Bethnal Green becomes a dense, fragrant, occasionally chaotic tunnel of cut flowers, potted plants, bulbs, and seasonal foliage. Traders arrive before dawn. By 8am the street is already taking shape. By 11am it's at full volume, the traders' calls, the press of people, the extraordinary concentration of colour.

It runs for about 150 metres. There are roughly 60 stalls. And surrounding them is a row of independent shops, ceramics, vintage, interiors, plant pots, delis, that have built up around the market over decades and are worth a browse in their own right.

What to Buy

Seasonal is the point here. Whatever is at its best in late spring will be piled high. Come in April and there are tulips stacked five rows deep. In summer it's dahlias and sweetpeas. In winter, Christmas trees and holly and dried botanicals. Prices are genuinely reasonable, often better than supermarkets for the same stems, and the traders know their stock.

Near closing time (around 1:30–2pm), prices drop sharply as traders would rather sell than take things home. A full bunch of mixed seasonal stems for £5 is not unusual. If you can carry a bit of weight on the tube, this is the time.

The Vibe

It's a proper East London Sunday activity, meaning it combines a certain effortful casualness with genuine community. Locals come every week; visitors come once and tell people about it for months. The indie shops on either side of the market keep interesting hours (many only open on Sundays) and extend the window for browsing.

The Clove Club is nearby in Shoreditch if you want to follow a morning here with a proper lunch. Several good coffee spots operate on the street itself during market hours.

Practical Notes

  • Sundays only, 8am–2pm. The market does not operate on any other day.
  • Arrive before 10am for the best selection and more manageable crowds.
  • Hoxton station (Overground) is the nearest, about 8 minutes on foot.
  • Bring cash, most stalls are cash-preferred, though many now take card.
  • Flowers on public transport: wrap in paper (offered by most stalls), carry upright, and avoid the busiest crush on the Overground.
