One hundred life-size cast-iron men, each a cast of Gormley's own body, spread across two miles of beach and out into the Irish Sea. At low tide you can walk among them; at high tide some disappear entirely. The effect is genuinely arresting.
30 minutes from Liverpool city centre by Merseyrail. Best at dawn or dusk, or during a dramatic sky. Take a flask, the beach is exposed and there isn't much nearby.
