Kirkgate Market is a city in miniature. The Victorian hall and the 1970s New Bazaar together cover over 800 stalls with a diversity that reflects Leeds's actual population: Halal butchers, Caribbean food stalls, South Asian sweet shops, fresh fish, vintage clothing, and hardware traders who have been here for 50 years. Marks & Spencer opened their first permanent store here in 1904.
The food hall section makes for the best cheap lunch in Leeds. Come Monday to Saturday; the Saturday market is the fullest. Arrive hungry.
