Smaller and quieter than every famous lake in the district, Rydal Water is where Wordsworth came to think. The circuit, past Rydal Mount, around the lake, back through the fields, takes about an hour and rewards with views the grander lakes can't quite offer.
The islet in the middle and the reflections in still weather are genuinely beautiful. Combine with Grasmere village for a full morning.
