The Victorian Market sits in the middle of Inverness city centre and is almost invisible from the street, which is why most visitors walk past it. Inside: a cast-iron-roofed arcade from the 1870s with independent traders selling local produce, Highland crafts, second-hand books, and proper street food. It is neither boutique nor especially polished, which is why it works.
The coffee is better than the setting suggests. The Highland fudge stalls are a cliché but an accurate one. On a rainy day, and Inverness has those, this is the most pleasant half-hour in the city. Monday to Saturday only.
