Pollok is Glasgow's best free escape and the one most Glaswegians would rather keep quiet. The park covers 360 acres of woodland and formal gardens in the South Side, with the White Cart Water running through the middle and a herd of Highland cattle who treat walkers with magnificent indifference.
Pollok House, a Georgian mansion stuffed with an improbable collection of El Greco and Goya, sits at the centre of the park. Entry is charged for the house, but the gardens and the park itself are free all year. On a clear morning this is one of the best walks in any British city.
