The Clifton Suspension Bridge is more impressive than photographs suggest. Standing 76 metres above the tidal Avon, the bridge stretches 214 metres across a limestone gorge that drops sharply on both sides, the Clifton side tree-lined and Georgian, the Leigh Woods side ancient and dark. Walking across takes five minutes and costs nothing.
The visitor centre on the Clifton side is small but informative. The best view of the bridge is from the Leigh Woods bank looking back toward Clifton at dusk, when the lights come on and the gorge below fills with shadow. Free to cross on foot at all times.
