Overview
The Flour Pot has multiple branches across Brighton now, but the Sydney Street location in North Laine is the one to know, smaller, slightly more neighbourhood-feeling, and with the particular character of a place that has found its rhythm. It's a proper bakery first: they bake their own bread daily, the sourdough is what it says it is, and the pastries are made with the kind of attention that makes the difference between something good and something you tell people about.
Brighton has a lot of food and drink options aimed at the visitor market. The Flour Pot is not that, it's a bakery that happens to be in a city with a lot of visitors.
What to Get
The croissant is the benchmark, properly laminated, shatteringly crisp outside, tender within. The pain au raisin is a better choice if you want something sweeter. The sourdough loaves are excellent and worth buying if you're staying somewhere with kitchen access.
The sandwiches use their own bread and good seasonal fillings, roasted vegetables, good cheese, fresh herbs. Coffee is Allpress-based and well-made.
The Vibe
Unhurried and friendly. The Sydney Street branch has limited seating, a small counter area inside and occasionally tables outside, so this is partly a takeaway-and-walk experience. North Laine is immediately around it, making this the ideal start to a morning browsing the area.
Perfect for before or after a walk down to The Lanes, or as a morning stop before heading to the beach.
