Overview
Brighton beach is, objectively, not the most beautiful beach in the country, it's shingle, not sand, the sea is the grey-green of the English Channel, and for much of the year the weather is ambivalent at best. But at sunrise, before the tourists arrive and before the arcades open and before the i360 cable car begins its circuits, something different is available: the actual coast, the actual sea, the actual light.
The sunrise over Brighton beach, facing south-southeast, over the Channel, happens in a particular quality of light that is specific to the English coast. Soft, slightly hazy, running orange and gold across the water. In summer, sunrise can be as early as 4:45am. In October and November, it's more forgiving: around 7am, and with that particular autumn coastal clarity.
The Experience
Come early enough that you're there before the pebbles fill up. Walk the length of the seafront from the Palace Pier to the West Pier, or what remains of it, the rusted iron skeleton that has become, through years of decay, unexpectedly beautiful. The walk is about a kilometre.
If you swim in the sea, the water here is bracing at most times of year. The Brighton Swimming Club operates year-round and runs a dawn swim from the beach shelters that is open to non-members with a small fee.
The light on the West Pier ruins at sunrise is one of the better photographic moments available in the south of England.
After
The seafront gradually wakes up. By 7am there are runners. By 8am there are dog walkers and the occasional early tourist. By 9am the Flour Pot is open for coffee and pastry. The timing of a sunrise beach walk followed by a breakfast somewhere good is one of Brighton's best two-part mornings.
Practical Notes
- The beach is accessible at all times.
- Brighton station is about 10 minutes on foot from the seafront.
- Pebble beach, stable footwear recommended. No preparation needed beyond a coat.
- Wild swimming in the sea is popular; facilities on the seafront (toilets, showers) open from around 8am.
- The sunset from the West Pier end is also spectacular, facing west, over the sea.
