Museum Gardens

FreeoutdoorYork City Centre, York

Free riverside gardens with medieval abbey ruins. York's most peaceful and atmospheric outdoor space.

Free entry

Museum Gardens is where York locals escape to when the city centre gets too much. The ruins of St Mary's Abbey stand at one end, the river Ouse borders the other side, and in between there's excellent grass for lying on and enough trees to feel genuinely sheltered.

It's completely free, perpetually beautiful, and one of the better picnic spots in the north of England. The ruins at golden hour are some of York's best photography.
