White Rocks Beach

FreeoutdoorCauseway Coast, Portrush

Basalt caves, limestone arches and a wide Atlantic beach with the Causeway cliffs as a backdrop - one of the most cinematic stretches of coastline in Ireland.

Free entry

The White Rocks stretch east of Portrush towards the Giant's Causeway, and this is the section of coastline worth walking. The caves at the western end are accessible at low tide and have been carved out by centuries of Atlantic swell working against the soft limestone. The cliff path above gives you the panorama: beach below, basalt stacks to the east, and on a clear day the Scottish hills across the water.

Come at sunrise or late afternoon, the light here is something particular. The limestone cliffs catch it differently depending on the angle, and the caves go a deep ochre at golden hour. Even on grey days the drama of the landscape holds. Parking is signposted from the Causeway Coast road and is free outside peak season. The beach itself is rarely crowded except in high summer, and the cliff path is accessible to anyone with reasonable fitness.
