Carew Castle stands above a tidal millpond with its own tidal mill, one of only three restored tidal mills in Wales, and the combination of castle, water, and mill in one small site is remarkable. The castle itself spans several centuries of development from Norman fortification to Elizabethan mansion, all visible in the surviving fabric.
The millpond walk around the back is free; the castle and mill carry a small charge. On a weekday outside summer, you may have the whole site to yourself. The Carew Cross, a 4-metre Celtic cross just outside, is one of the finest in Wales and entirely free to see.
