Edale is the village at the foot of Kinder Scout where the Pennine Way begins. The Pennine Way runs 268 miles north to the Scottish border; Edale is the beginning or the end depending on your direction, and the village pub (the Old Nag's Head, the official start) reflects that heritage. Kinder Scout itself is a high moorland plateau at 636 metres, peat groughs, dark bog, the Jacob's Ladder path rising steeply from the valley.
The Kinder Trespass of 1932, when walkers illegally occupied the plateau to challenge access laws, led directly to the creation of national parks and the right to roam. The hill carries that history as well as the weather. Check conditions before you go.
