Dovedale is the most visited valley in the Peak District and with reason. The River Dove runs through a narrow limestone gorge between natural rock towers. Thorpe Cloud, Lion Rock, Ilam Rock, and the stepping stones at the southern entrance have been photographed continuously since the Victorian era. The gorge walk from Ilam Rock car park takes about two hours return.
It is busiest in summer and can feel crowded at the stepping stones. Walk north past the Twelve Apostles rock formation for the less-visited upper valley, which is quieter and equally beautiful.
