BALTIC is housed in a 1950s flour mill on the Gateshead bank of the Tyne and has been one of the UK's most significant contemporary art venues since it opened in 2002. The programme brings major international artists. Antony Gormley, Yoko Ono, and Wolfgang Tillmans have all shown here, with no permanent collection and no admission charge.
The rooftop restaurant has the best view of the Tyne in any building: seven bridges in one sightline, the Sage to the east, Newcastle across the water. Even if the current exhibition isn't for you, the building is worth the trip.
