The Eildon Hills are the Borders' most recognisable landmark, three summits rising from the Tweed valley, visible for miles in every direction. The walk to the highest point (Mid Hill, 422m) from Melrose takes about an hour each way and delivers views to the Cheviots, the Lammermuirs and on clear days, the Pentlands.
The hills are threaded with paths and steeped in local mythology. Thomas the Rhymer supposedly disappeared into them. Start from the Leaderfoot Road side of Melrose.
