Overview
The Whitworth is an anomaly among British galleries: genuinely surprising, consistently underestimated, and free. Part of the University of Manchester and set at the edge of Whitworth Park in Moss Side, it underwent a significant renovation completed in 2015, the architect MUMA extended the building into the park itself, creating a glass-walled café and gallery wing that feels suspended between interior and exterior.
The collection is wide-ranging but with specific depths that most galleries don't have. The textile and wallpaper collection is extraordinary. William Morris designs, historic tapestries, contemporary fabric work, and forms the backbone of what makes this place different from a standard modern art gallery. There's also strong holding of works on paper, prints, and a rotating contemporary programme that frequently commissions new work for the space.
What to See
The permanent galleries on the ground floor rotate works from the collection and are worth spending time with, expect to find Turner watercolours alongside contemporary African textile art, which is not a combination you encounter often.
The glass gallery café extending into the park is one of the better places to spend a rainy afternoon in Manchester: warm inside, with views of the park through the full-height glass, decent coffee, and well-made food at reasonable prices.
Special exhibitions have featured major international artists alongside significant survey shows. Check the programme before visiting as the special exhibitions are often the reason to time your visit.
For a Solo Day
The Whitworth is particularly good for a morning alone, small enough to explore completely in two hours but rich enough to reward slower looking. The café at the end of a circuit, with the park visible outside, is a reliable way to decompress after engaging seriously with work.
