Overview
Monmouth Coffee opened its first shop on the Covent Garden street it's named after in 1978, back when specialty coffee in the UK wasn't much of a conversation. The Borough branch, in a low-ceilinged railway arch right beside Borough Market, is the better one. It is small, slightly cave-like, permanently smelling of roast, and has no wi-fi by design.
That last detail is the point. Monmouth doesn't want you working here. They want you drinking coffee, perhaps reading something, perhaps talking to the person with you. The communal wooden tables enforce a kind of accidental intimacy that London's bigger cafés rarely manage.
The Coffee
They roast their own beans at a roastery in Bermondsey and the sourcing is serious, single origins, direct trade relationships, seasonal changes to the menu. The batch brew changes regularly and is worth asking about. The espresso-based drinks are excellent without being precious. The flat white is well-made; the filter coffee is the thing to order if you want to taste what they're actually doing.
They sell whole beans to take away, and if you buy coffee regularly, this is one of the best places in London to do it. The staff will actually talk you through the current offerings.
The Vibe
Quiet in a way that feels deliberate rather than empty. The lack of laptop workers (enforced by the no-wi-fi policy) means the atmosphere is closer to a neighbourhood café than a co-working space. People come here with books, with a date, with five minutes to themselves before diving back into Borough Market chaos.
On cold or rainy mornings, the arch keeps things warm and close in a way that's genuinely appealing. On sunny days, there's usually a small cluster of people standing outside on the cobbles.
Practical Notes
- Open Monday–Saturday, roughly 7:30am–6pm. Closed Sundays.
- No wi-fi, intentionally. Cash and card accepted.
- Very small inside, you might need to wait briefly for a seat on busy Saturday mornings.
- Two minutes from Borough Market and five minutes from London Bridge station.
- The Bermondsey roastery (Arch 3, Spa Road) is worth visiting if you're interested in seeing the operation.
