Overview
Maltby Street Market started in 2010 as an informal spillover from Borough Market, producers who wanted a different kind of outlet, somewhere less tourist-facing, where they could sell directly and get immediate feedback. It grew through the railway arches along Maltby Street and Rope Walk into one of London's most concentrated and genuinely good food experiences.
It is smaller than Borough, less photographed, and visited primarily by people who know what they're looking for. That's both its limitation and its appeal. If Borough Market on a summer Saturday feels like navigating a food festival, Maltby Street on a Saturday morning feels like something more local, more considered.
What to Find
The arches house a rotating selection of permanent and pop-up producers. Regulars have included Monmouth Coffee with a small pour-over setup, St. John Bread & Wine serving bone marrow and house wines from a hatch, Kernel Brewery selling bottles from the arch where they brew, Mons Cheesemongers with an extraordinary selection of European cheese, and various small-batch producers doing everything from Scottish smoked salmon to South American empanadas.
The Kernel Brewery taproom at the far end of the arches is the destination for natural beers and lagers brewed on-site, widely considered one of the best craft breweries in the country.
The Vibe
Saturday morning, from about 9am to 2pm. Bring a bag. Wear shoes you can stand in. Walk the full length of the arches before committing to anything so you can make a considered plan. The best approach is to do a recce lap, then go back for the things that stuck with you.
It can be tight between the arches when busy, but rarely unpleasantly so. This is very much a come-with-someone situation, the narrow space, the stop-start browsing, and the multiple small decisions ("should we share this?" "do we want cheese or the empanada?") make it unexpectedly good for a date.
Practical Notes
- Saturdays only, 9am–2pm. A smaller selection may be available on Sundays.
- Bermondsey station (Jubilee line) is the nearest, about 10 minutes on foot.
- The walk from London Bridge station (15–20 minutes) past the White Cube and through Bermondsey Street is itself worthwhile.
- Bring cash as backup, most traders take card but not all.
