Dunvegan Castle has been the seat of the MacLeod clan since the 13th century and has never once been sold, which is a remarkable thing for any building in Britain. The castle sits above Loch Dunvegan on the northwest of the island, surrounded by formal gardens that descend to the sea. Inside are the clan relics: the Fairy Flag (silk, possibly Byzantine, genuinely ancient), swords, portraits, and 750 years of one family's accumulation.
Boat trips from the castle jetty visit a nearby grey seal colony. Seal numbers are high and the approach is close enough to be genuinely memorable. Gardens and castle together take about two hours at a comfortable pace.
