FreeoutdoorMachrie, Isle-of-arran

Six ancient stone circles on an open Arran moor. Bronze Age landscape with cinematic scale.

Free entry

Machrie Moor has six distinct stone circles spread across an expanse of open moorland, with the distinctive red sandstone pillars of the largest reaching three to four metres high. The landscape is vast, the sky enormous, and the atmosphere of accumulated time genuinely affecting.

A 3km path from the A841 leads across the moor. Boggy after rain, wear appropriate footwear. Sunset and sunrise visits are the most cinematic.
