Loch an Eilein

£0–£4outdoorCairngorms, Inverness

A ruined island castle reflected in a Cairngorms loch that looks entirely untouched.

£0–£4 per person (parking)

Loch an Eilein has one of the most quietly cinematic views in Scotland, a 13th-century castle ruin sitting on a small island, reflected perfectly in the still water, surrounded by ancient Scots pine. It looks like no one else knows about it, even when they do.

The circular walk around the loch takes about an hour. It's peaceful enough to genuinely slow your breathing down. Go early morning for the mist.
