Culloden Battlefield

£14activityCulloden, Inverness

The moor where Bonnie Prince Charlie's army was destroyed in 1746, the last battle fought on British soil.

£14 per person

Culloden is a moorland field five miles east of Inverness, and on a grey day, which is often, it is one of the most powerful places in Scotland. The 1746 battle lasted less than an hour and effectively ended the Highland clan system. The clan graves are marked by rough stones, still visited by descendants from around the world.

The National Trust visitor centre is outstanding, the exhibition uses smart design to convey the full historical weight without over-dramatising it. The battle map showing the troop movements in the final hour is worth the entry fee alone. Walk the battlefield afterwards. The silence is not empty.
