Hay Castle has been many things over the centuries. Norman motte, Jacobean mansion, Richard Booth's personal domain, and it's recently been restored into a proper arts and heritage centre. The garden is open and quiet; the interior spaces host exhibitions and events.
It's a gentle visit rather than a spectacular one, but the setting is genuinely lovely. It grounds the whole town and makes you understand why someone wanted to be king here.
