Stockbridge Market

£5–£20marketStockbridge, Edinburgh

A Sunday artisan food market in Edinburgh's most charming neighbourhood, small, high-quality, and embedded in a village-within-a-city that's worth the walk.

£5–£20 per person · Casual grazing across three or four stalls with a coffee will come in well under £15.

Overview

Stockbridge Market runs on Sunday mornings in Saunders Street, a stone's throw from the Water of Leith in what is arguably Edinburgh's most liveable neighbourhood. Stockbridge is the kind of area that shows up in surveys of happiest places to live and it's not hard to see why, handsome Georgian and Victorian streets, a concentration of independent shops, the Water of Leith walkway running through it, and a sense of community that most of central Edinburgh lacks.

The market is small, 20 to 30 stalls depending on the week, and strongly focused on quality over quantity. The producers are local and Scottish, and many are regulars who have built a following specifically from the Stockbridge crowd.

What to Find

The market specialises in food: artisan bread, cheese, cured meats, seasonal preserves, hot food from various independent producers. There's usually a good Scottish cheese selection, a bread stall doing something properly fermented, and at least one or two hot food options for a quick Sunday lunch.

Beyond food, there are typically a handful of craft stalls, hand-thrown ceramics, handmade jewellery, seasonal plants, that make this more than a straight food market.

The Neighbourhood

The market is reason enough to come to Stockbridge, but the neighbourhood deserves two hours. Walk along the Water of Leith from here toward the Dean Village, a 20-minute walk through one of Edinburgh's most unexpected landscapes: a steep-sided gorge that feels completely removed from the city above. Come back through Comely Bank or circulate back through Stockbridge's main street for coffee at Artisan Roast on Broughton Street.

Practical Notes

  • Sundays only, roughly 10am–5pm. Check local listings as times vary slightly by season.
  • Stockbridge is about 20–25 minutes on foot from Waverley station or a short bus ride (First Buses run along Queensferry Street and Comely Bank Avenue).
  • The Water of Leith Walkway is directly adjacent, a lovely extension to any visit.
  • No dedicated parking nearby; come on foot or by public transport.
