Winchcombe

£0–£10outdoorWinchcombe, Cotswolds

Underrated Cotswold town on the Cotswold Way, gateway to Sudeley Castle, Belas Knap, and Cleeve Hill.

£0–£10 per person

Winchcombe gets a fraction of the visitors that nearby Broadway and Bourton receive, and is better for it. The high street is genuinely lived-in, with a good deli, a craft pottery, and local butcher. Sudeley Castle at the edge of town is one of the area's best historic sites.

From here, the walk to Belas Knap neolithic long barrow (3,500 BC) takes 90 minutes up the escarpment. The view from the top explains why the Cotswolds has always been fought over.
