Canterbury Cathedral is 1,400 years of English religious and architectural history compressed into a single building, and it genuinely overwhelms when you walk in. The stained glass is some of the oldest in the world; the fan vaulting is extraordinary; the crypt is properly atmospheric.
Allow at least two hours rather than rushing around the highlights. The precincts around it, the ruins, the gardens, the medieval gateway, are part of the experience too.
