Ikon Gallery occupies a Victorian Gothic school building in Brindleyplace and uses it beautifully, the architecture provides a serious, atmospheric backdrop for some of the most interesting contemporary art programming in the Midlands. Admission is free.
The building is gorgeous, the canal-side location makes the approach feel like a proper cultural event, and the programme consistently punches above what you'd expect for a city-outside-London gallery.
