CS Lewis Square

FreeoutdoorEast Belfast, Belfast

Seven large bronze Narnia sculptures in East Belfast, marking the birthplace of CS Lewis, free, quietly striking, and worth the walk.

Free entry

CS Lewis was born in East Belfast in 1898 and the city has marked that fact with seven large bronze sculptures drawn from The Chronicles of Narnia. Aslan, the White Witch, Mr Tumnus, the Pevensie children. They're spread across a public square near the Holywood Arches, and encountering them in a residential East Belfast street is unexpectedly affecting.

The sculptures are the work of artist Maurice Harron and have a scale and quality that rewards spending time with them rather than just photographing and moving on. The surrounding neighbourhood is worth a short walk. Orangefield, where Lewis grew up, is nearby, and the area gives you a sense of the Belfast that formed him.

Completely free, completely outdoors, completely worth the detour from the usual circuit. Better on a dry day.
