Introduction
Most people visit Belfast and skip Derry entirely. That is a genuine mistake. Derry is the only city in Ireland with a complete set of medieval walls still intact, and walking them is one of the best free things you can do in the whole country. The Bogside murals below the walls are among the most powerful political art in Europe. The Peace Bridge over the Foyle, opened in 2011, is beautiful in the way functional architecture rarely manages to be. And below all of it, the city has a cafe and bar scene that punches considerably above its size.
The city's history is serious and worth engaging with properly. The Guildhall has free exhibitions that put it in context better than most paid museums manage. The Bogside murals are the other side of the coin from Belfast's Falls Road. But Derry also just works as a place: compact, walkable, cheap, and with the kind of independent businesses that feel genuinely rooted rather than cultivated for tourism. A night here has a different rhythm from Belfast. Two nights is the right amount.
Getting There
Ryanair operates direct flights to City of Derry Airport from several UK and European cities. The bus from Belfast Europa Bus Centre takes around 1 hour 30 minutes on the Goldline express service and runs frequently throughout the day. If you're driving, the A6 from Belfast is the main route. There is no direct rail connection to the centre, though Derry train station sits on the Waterside and connects to Belfast via Coleraine.
Neighbourhoods to Know
Walled City is the core, surrounded on all sides by the 17th-century walls. The Diamond, Guildhall Square, Shipquay Street cafes, and most of the historic sights are here. It's small enough to walk end to end in 15 minutes.
Waterside sits across the Peace Bridge on the east bank of the Foyle, with St Columb's Park, the train station, and the quieter residential side of the city. Worth crossing to for the view back to the walls.
Bogside sits just outside the walls to the west and contains the famous murals including the People's Gallery series. This is where the civil rights history of the city is most legible. Walk it with some background knowledge and it makes sense.
